A Year-Round Plan for a Healthy Lawn

What to do each season to keep grass thick, green and resilient.

A great lawn is four small habits repeated all year. None is complicated; the trick is timing each one to the season when it matters most.

Spring: wake it up gently

Start with a clean-up and a first mow at a moderate height — never scalp winter-weakened grass. A balanced spring feeding and pre-emergent weed control (where appropriate) set the tone; overseed thin areas while soil is cool and moist.

Summer: mow high, water deep

Raise the mower — taller grass shades roots and crowds out weeds. Water deeply but infrequently (about 2.5cm once or twice a week) in the early morning. Brown patches in heat usually mean dormancy, not death; resist the urge to flood them daily.

Fall: the money season

Autumn is when lawns are truly built. Core aeration, overseeding, and a fall feeding do more for next year’s turf than anything done in spring. Keep mowing until growth stops and mulch leaves back into the lawn instead of bagging them.

Winter: leave it alone

Stay off frozen grass, keep it clear of heavy debris, and service the mower. That’s it — the lawn is resting, and so should you.

  • Never cut more than one-third of the blade at once
  • Sharpen mower blades at least once a season
  • Water mornings only — wet nights invite disease
